The Retail Ride-
Published Monthly-Loss Prevention & Security Journal Magazine-2002/2003-Virgo Publishing Inc.
Introducing “The Retail Ride” a 13 part fictional serial of the real world challenges facing
the men and women of the retail Loss Prevention profession.
Eric Landers, the Director of Loss Prevention for Concord Inc., a privately held five
company retail group, (nicknamed by the employees the Big Grape) has hit the field with
an unannounced visit to the Big Grape's new showcase store, the gleaming flagship of
their Knob Hill supermarket division.
With a field Loss Prevention staff decimated by budget cuts, shrink, and controllable
expense spiking up throughout the company (and Sr. Management unable to connect the
dots…Hello!) The P&L of Knob Hill’s showcase store’s first inventory recently bled red
ink all over Eric’s boss the Big Grape’s owner, Mr. Concord, AKA The Big Raisin.
Intending to demonstrate to the owner, (a shrewd bean counter, but still a bean counter)
that down sizing a savvy field Loss Prevention staff to save payroll makes about as much
sense as yanking up plants to see how well the roots are growing. Eric Landers left the
seclusion of the corporate glass cocoon, to get his hands dirty and make a point. He
slipped unannounced into the troubled showcase store during Retail Ride prime time,
Saturday night.
